segregationist: governor george wallace. bull conner. wanted segregation. self-explanatory.
abolitionists: believe blacks deserve equal rights. abolitionists believe that success would be more probable if black children had access to proper education and acclimation to middle class values. equal access. equal opportunities. which is true on some level, we need access to the arena in order to play the game.
anti-racists: know that “the game” IS the problem, and actively fight to dismantle racism interpersonally, institutionally, and systemically. white anti-racists know that racism hurts whites too. all of the relationships you forfeit, the culture that goes unshared, so much human relationship value buried underneath layers of hate. anti racists work against that by making choices every day to combat racism on whatever level they can, from understanding privilege, asking family members not to tell racist jokes around them, streaming a black (non-parodying) tv show/movie with their family, to electing politicians that would effect blacks positively, to fighting it in their workplaces.
abolitionism is cool. it freed the enslaved, but it freed them to homelessness, lynching, and imprisonment. there was absolutely no plan in place, no strategy, nothing. an anti-racist state of mind would have considered next steps…. be an anti-racist.
this photo is about anti racism in the education system specifically, but there are so many areas in which one could work.
